Who you calling a bitch?
I stopped trying to figure out why 45 does and says the things that he does after an alarming amount of folk felt he was qualified and prepared to be our next commander in chief. It is clear that #45 likes to play to his base. A demographic that can rarely list any policy that Trump has produced to improve their situation but seem to support 45 without question. And we know 45 likes the adulation and praise. Maybe that is why he decided to so arrogantly take on the NFL players who peacefully protest by taking a knee during the national anthem and refer to them as “son of a bitch.” Ah, suki suki now! (In my “Living Single” Regine voice.) This was the urban equivalent of “Yo momma.” (Continue reading from my Huffington Post article) So I check my bank account this weekend because according to my payment schedule my adjunct money (the little there is) should start for this term. Surprise, surprise it is not there. Now this will be the second time my money has not been available. Do I get a call from the institution or department? No, because all of those folks got paid and a part timer is not a priority. So I get myself together and early this morning at 8:03 AM I call the payroll office to ask, in the most professional manner I can muster, “Where is my money?” Let me give you a little back story. This was the second time teaching with this small community college. The first time my money was messed up I had to call and speak to the administrative assistant. She told me that although I had given them a voided check for direct deposit my first check would be mailed. (A fact that was never shared with my previously.) The admin assistant also delivered said message with that white woman tone of condescension that is most annoying. Something still did not sit right so I called the payroll office and they said they did not have a contract on file for me. So I emailed the department chair and copied the assistant to my recent findings. Assistant had to adjust tone with an apology and that I would have to drive up on a day that I do not teach and get a special check they had to cut. Now back to present day. Eventually I reach the woman in payroll this morning. She says that the only contract she has on file is for two substitute days I had to teach for another contract that went bust. (That is for another story of SACS and academic hazing.) She then went on to explain, again in that CWWT (condescending white woman tone), that sometimes a contract did not get to them in time but that does not mean that it does not exist. But she would research the matter and get back to me. I took a breath and said that is all well and good but I have lived up to my contractual agreement and do not want to make the forty minute drive to teach a class that I am not being paid for or for there is no contract on file. She then cranked up the CWWT by telling me that if I signed the contract that of course I would be paid and that I should meet my class. They just had to research where my contract was and again would inform me later of the process. This is the sad state of disrespectful treatment of educators, especially ones that are trying to piece meal an existence between part time gigs and free lance work. The attitude is that look we will pay you when we get to it. You will show up and work as expected. Now keep in mind, I know that every full time person with benefits got their money but some how part time folks are expected to be flexible with their pay. I ended the conversation with some very practiced professional prose. I call it the academic dozens. It is a way to rhetorically say “Yo momma” without actually saying that and cursing folks out. On the surface it came across as very benign but if you read the ABMT (angry black man tone) behind the exchange then the message of, “B*%ch where is my money” was loud and clear. Please stay tuned for my upcoming short book on similar challenges for disenfranchised educators. |
